Submission Terms
and Conditions
These terms apply to the photograph, answer, story and credit information you submit to Smile Atlas. Please read them before accepting. Submissions are voluntary and are reviewed before publication.
Book publication and no payment
Your submission may be included in a Smile Atlas book that is sold commercially, in print or digital form. Your contribution is unpaid: you will not receive a fee, royalties or any share of book sales or profits for the uses authorized by these terms.
As between you and Smile Atlas, all revenue and profits payable to Smile Atlas from those book sales belong exclusively to Smile Atlas. Printing costs, retailer or distributor charges, taxes and other publishing costs do not create any entitlement to payment for contributors.
1. Your ownership and permission
You retain ownership of your photograph and written material. You grant Smile Atlas a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to reproduce, publish, display and distribute your submitted material on its website, social channels and editorial newsletters, and in its printed and digital books, including covers, editions and reprints. The license also includes excerpts and images used to promote those books through Smile Atlas and its retailers.
This permission continues unless ended or restricted in accordance with applicable law. Smile Atlas may allow its printers, publishing platforms, distributors and other production providers to handle the material only as necessary for these authorized uses. You remain free to use and license your material elsewhere.
2. No remuneration or profit participation
By accepting, you agree that the authorized uses do not entitle you to payment, royalties, compensation or a share of revenue or profits, unless a separate written agreement expressly provides otherwise. To the extent permitted by applicable law, you waive demands for such payments arising solely from uses within the permission you have granted.
This is not a waiver of claims for unauthorized uses, breach of these terms, or rights and remedies that cannot legally be waived. It does not remove any mandatory right to withdraw consent. No publication, credit placement, complimentary book or other benefit is guaranteed as compensation for submitting.
3. Authority to submit and people pictured
You must be at least 18 and legally able to grant these permissions. You confirm that you own the relevant rights or have authorization from their holder covering all the uses described above, including commercial book publication without contributor payment. Merely possessing a photograph or appearing in it does not establish ownership of its copyright.
You must also have the necessary permission from identifiable people pictured for the proposed uses. If a minor is pictured, permission must come from their parent or legal guardian as required by applicable law. Permission from a photographer does not replace permission needed from the people pictured. Smile Atlas may request written evidence and may decline a submission if permissions cannot be verified.
4. Editorial handling and credit
We may select, crop, resize, format or make reasonable technical adjustments to photographs, and edit or translate text for length, clarity and presentation without materially misrepresenting the person or story. We will use the photographer credit you supply in editorial publication where practicable, subject to any applicable attribution rights. Please provide accurate credit information.
Selection is not guaranteed. We may decline or remove material. Your name, supplied public handle, city, country, answer and story may accompany a selected photograph. Your email is used to administer your submission and is not published; this form does not subscribe you to marketing emails.
5. Uses that require a separate agreement
Standalone print or merchandise sales featuring your photograph, licensing it to unrelated third parties, and brand advertising or endorsements unrelated to promoting the Smile Atlas books are not included in this permission.
6. Questions, withdrawal and records
To ask about your submission, correct a credit or request removal or withdrawal of permission, contact @smileatlas on Instagram and identify the submission. We will address requests under applicable law. Books may already have been printed or distributed; the effect on existing copies and future uses depends on the applicable legal rights and circumstances, and these terms do not impose an absolute bar on withdrawal.
We record your acceptance, its date and the version of these terms with your submission. Later changes do not expand permissions for earlier submissions without a new acceptance. Read our Privacy Policy for information about handling your data.
